Daryl Francis Gates was once the chief of police of the Los Angeles Police Department.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]
He didn't much care for his officers going to the Short Stop.[13]
He presented the Medal of Valor to John Carey for stopping the serial killer Mitchell Thurman.
Chief Gates later retired from Los Angeles Police Department. He once returned as a guest celebrity (in 1999), giving the benefit of his experience by providing helpful suggestions to those working their way through the training house.
On April 16, 2010, Daryl F. Gates died of bladder cancer in Dana Point, California, USA.

Chief Gates in PQ4 is played by and voiced by Daryl F. Gates.
In PQ4-PQ6, it's suggested that in the PQ universe, Daryl Gates was a Chief of Police for LA into 1993-1994 (perhaps into 1995-1996 as well). In real life Daryl Gates retired in 1992, but remained active designing games for Sierra.
While billed as the producer on PQ4 he had very little to do on the actual game and was more of an advisor. Some sources bill him as 'co-creator'. Tammy Dargan did most of the production and the story writing.
